An Inside View: ISG New Location
From removing metal units weighing hundreds of pounds to ripping out all the flooring, the ISG expansion is well underway—and laying the groundwork for its next steps, too. Reaching out to a wide range of visitors, the new building project will add new programming, an expanded Kids Club, amplified parkour and gymnastics areas, rental spaces, social gathering spots, and much more.
Intown Atlanta's FIRST multi-sport complex coming to
421 Dekalb Industrial Way
Decatur, Georgia 30033
Since signing the lease on the building on July 13th, we've made some great progress. Anna met with sports leagues and youth-based businesses throughout Atlanta, to discuss how we can best be in service to our community. These exciting conversations have informed how the 75,000 square feet of space will be divided and allocated to various sports and activities, to maximize its value to Decatur families and businesses. Just this week the storage units inside were removed, which dramatically opens up the space for us to really see the potential for filling it with fun activities.
The project will be phased in 2-3 steps. The first phase focuses on the south half of the building, which houses our class-based programming at Intown Stars. During this phase we will complete construction for the gymnastics, parkour, Kids Club, and circus arts program, as well as a brand new dance program we will be adding. Overlooking this half of the gym will be a 2,500 square foot parent observation mezzanine where laptop stations and comfortable seating will welcome parents to stay and watch all the fun, relax and read or get some work done. Phase 1 also includes 5,000 square feet of premium studio space, ideal for hourly and daily rentals (think: meeting spaces, party/event rental, class and training space, small business incubator, corporate team building.....). This phase will be completed by Summer of 2022, at which time we will move out of our North Decatur Road space into our new home.
Phase 2 consists of building out a 15,000 square foot turf field, a 5,000 square foot court for activities such as volleyball, pickle ball, basketball and dodge ball, and a 10,000 square foot baseball/softball training area with strength and conditioning space, pitching and batting cages. Plus, a stylish coffee shop complete with cozy indoor and outdoor seating, a healthy, child-friendly menu, and delicious coffee.
The building space was previously a U-haul rental and storage facility.
Demo Is Underway
After years of planning, dreaming, and discussion, the new building's renovation is moving visibly forward. Over the Fall of 2021 and Winter of 2021/22, the DIGS Architecture Firm, working with a variety of specialized contractors and subcontractors, will transform the old Uhaul facility.
"To guide me through the ups and downs, I've been so privileged to work with the best Production Team that could ever be created - which is the group tasked with the actual building of our new gym. The Production Team consists of architects, Erin Graves and Lindsay Miller of DIGS Architecture Firm; Damon Vance, Owner of ReleVance Building Solutions; contractor, Chris Barnes; Brittany Baker, COO of Intown Stars; my Executive Assistant, Laura Campbell; and myself. I am absolutely certain that this endeavor would not be possible without their brilliance, thoughtful execution, and support.
The Executive Team at Intown Stars, and countless other staff members and coaches, have also made significant contributions to the plan for the new gym. From designing the gymnastics and parkour layouts, to branding and marketing, to visiting sports complexes all over Georgia, the excitement and commitment the Intown Stars family has shown over the last year has truly been the wind beneath my wings."
